When I was an intern between years at MBA school, I had a job at SAP, a huge multi-billion dollar software company. On my last day, my manager walked me to the door with his arm over my shoulder and said, "A little feedback for you, Dave. When you walk through the halls, I encourage you to walk a little faster and smile a little less."
I thought this was valuable feedback. I tried applying it over the next couple years. I failed. I was fired. And then I started my own business on the antithesis of this advice. I now "walk slow and smile more". That's my main core value as an individual and in our company now.
It was that feedback that eventually helped me see the way... and the way that wasn't for me.
When you're asking your employees, customers, members, boards, or even your family for feedback, you may hear things you don't want to hear. Sometimes it's hard. But think of it this way - feedback is information. You can interpret that and use it in a lot of different ways. We have the power to use it to our strength. That's up to us.
Let's look at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, TX. They received some negative feedback from a guest. Watch the video above and see how they handled it. They handled it in a way that got 2.5m views on the internet. That's what they did with negative feedback.
But first, you NEED feedback. It's not optional if you want to improve. Feedback is good. But surveys suck. (that's another blog post)
Ditch the survey. Use feedback automation. There's so much more you can do with regular and continuous feedback. Take a look at how PropFuel can help you drive feedback using targeted campaigns to solve specific business problems.
