The Endurance of Alex Honnold - Free Solo

May 3, 2024

Free Solo is the hottest documentary being talked about among the hipsters (and me) these days. Filmed by epic photographer and mountaineer, Jimmy Chin, it follows Alex Honnold, a free solo climber (no ropes), as he prepares for and climbs El Capitan in Yosemite National Park over the course of nearly 4 hours.

If he makes one mistake... just one small mistake, he will fall and die. It's black and white. There's no margin for error.

In the movie, one of his friends compares him to an Olympic athlete, who if he doesn't win the gold... dies.

I had the honor of meeting Alex today at a local event in Boston.

It's rare that you see anything in life that's perfect. Alex is a man that works to achieve perfection, and then banks on it. The consequence of imperfection is death.

Today, when he was asked if there was anything he does to prepare mentally for a feat like this... maybe meditation, visualization, anything at all... he stared into space for a second and said, (and I'll paraphrase) "No. This is not about getting yourself pumped up or getting the adrenaline flowing. This is about consistency, pacing, and repetition. Practicing and practicing over and over until there's nothing but 100% confidence in what I'm doing."

To him, he's eliminated the risk by preparing for it and practicing little by little over a long period of time..

There's a relationship here in how we work. We can't come into the office and get pumped up to make great strides with our constituents. It takes endurance. It takes time. It takes repetition.

And naturally, here's where my mind went... We can't send out a survey and expect that to yield dramatic results. We need to constantly be reaching out to our constituents for feedback over and over and over. Again, and again, and again. One question at a time, just like Alex practices his segments.

It's the endurance and persistence that yields results. It's not the adrenaline.

I would love to show you how PropFuel can help capture feedback from your members consistently over a long period of time. Let's set up a tie to talk: www.propfuel.com

I strongly encourage you to watch this National Geographic documentary. It's on Hulu if you have a subscription, or I'm sure you can find it anywhere online.

Spread the love,
